Substantial proportion of patients with Graves’ disease have thyroid eye disease

Worldwide, 40% of patients with Graves’ disease have thyroid eye disease (TED), according to a study published in Clinical Endocrinology.

Researchers found that the pooled prevalence of TED was

-38% for Europe

-44% for Asia

-27% for North America

-58% for Oceania.

In Southeast Asia and the Middle East, TED prevalence as 35% and 48%, respectively.

Predominantly Caucasian regions had a lower prevalence of TED compared to Asians

The most common clinical manifestation included lid retraction (57%), proptosis (57%), diplopia (36%), and ocular hypertension (13%).
