More adverse outcomes seen in children with LN on dialysis

Children with lupus nephritis (LN) on dialysis are at higher risk of hospitalization and lower rates of kidney transplantation compared to children with non-lupus glomerular disease (NLGD) on maintenance dialysis, according to a study.

In this retrospective cohort study, data from 231 patients with LN and 1726 patients with NLGD on maintenance dialysis aged 6-20 years were analyzed.

In the first year following the start of dialysis, children with LN were more likely to be hospitalized than children with NLGD (63.3% vs 48.6%). Children with LN were also less likely to receive a kidney transplant in the first 3 years following the start of dialysis.

Anemia was associated with hospitalization after the start of dialysis.

Lower kidney transplantation rates were associated with nonwhite race.
