Rare Inflammatory Disease Linked to COVID-19 in Kids

Symptoms of a rare inflammatory disease are appearing in some children who have come in to contact with the novel coronavirus, according to a statement by the New York State Department of Health.

There are as many as 64 potential cases in New York of what is being called “Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome Associated with COVID-19.”

Symptoms of this inflammatory syndrome appear to overlap with Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Kawasaki disease is a rare disorder that inflames the blood vessels and sometimes causes swelling in the hands and feet.

New York Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot said most children present with prolonged high fevers but may also have very red eyes, brightly colored lips, and a “strawberry tongue.”
