Use of automated imaging metrics in TED may provide rapid clinical information
The use of automated imaging metrics in thyroid eye disease has the potential to provide rapid clinical information that could identify visual impairments in earlier stages, potentially leading to better treatment options, according to a study.
In this study, 204 CT images of orbits in patients with thyroid eye disease were analyzed with an automated segmentation tool.
A univariate analysis showed some correlations between CT metrics and clinical data. There was a strong correlation with metrics related to the extraocular muscles and the presence of ocular motility deficits of the superior, inferior, and lateral recti; however, superior rectus motility deficits were mildly correlated with muscle volume.
There was a strong correlation between motility defects of the medial rectus and muscle volume. Motility defects were weakly correlated with average and maximum muscle diameter.
The authors concluded that the use of automated imaging metrics may aid in the “prevention and recognition of visual impairments in [thyroid eye disease] before they reach an advanced or irreversible stage and while they are able to be improved with immunomodulatory treatments.”
