Histotype, disease-free interval may predict lung metastasis recurrence in STS

Posted on

Specific histotypes and disease-free interval length may predict lung metastasis recurrence and lung metastasis-specific mortality in patients with soft tissue sarcomas (STS), according to a study.

In this analysis, lung metastasis recurrence (LMR) and lung metastasis-specific mortality (LMSM) was studied in 164 patients with STS lung metastasectomy (LMTS) over the course of 30 years.

The 10- and 15- year LMR cumulative incidence were 0.77 (0.76-0.78). The 10- and 15- year freedom from LMSM incidence were 0.60 [0.51-0.70] and 0.56 [0.47-0.67], respectively.

LMR was predicted by malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor histotype, a disease-free interval up to 68 months, and lung metastasis size ≥4 mm. LMSM was predicted by myxofibrosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, adjuvant chemotherapy, a disease-free interval between 2-20 months, and a primary tumor size between 3.6 cm and 10 cm.

In patients with a tumor size from ≥20 cm, there was a sharp increase in LMSM.

The authors noted that these findings needed to be confirmed by larger randomized studies.
