Is overall survival in metastatic soft tissue sarcomas increasing?

Posted on

In a new study investigating the prognosis of patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcomas (STS), researchers found that overall survival in this patient population increased at one reference center in Germany, highlighting the need for more research on treatment strategies.

A total of 212 patients who developed metastatic disease from STS at the Sarcoma Unit of one institution between 2010 and 2016, were included. There was a 24-month median overall survival after first documentation of metastatic disease. The 1 year overall survival rate was 70%, the 2-year overall survival rate was 49.9%, and the 5 year rate was 24.8%.

Significant predictors for mortality were gender, age, location and size of the primary tumor, histology, and disease-free interval.
