Severe renal arteriosclerosis can predict atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease in LN

Posted on

Severe renal arteriosclerosis (r‐ASCL) can predict atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in LN, according to a study.

In this study, data including demographics, ASCVD risk factors, and pathology reports at the time of diagnosis, were collected from 189 patients with LN who underwent diagnostic biopsy. Researchers manually validated all incident ASCVD events.

A total of 31% of patients had any reported r-ASCL with 7% reporting moderate‐severe r‐ASCL. Prevalence increased to 39% and 12%, respectively, after incorporating systematically re‐examined r‐ASCL grade. Over an 11-year follow‐up period, 22 incident ASCVD events noted.

Researchers concluded that severe r‐ASCL in diagnostic LN biopsies was associated with 9‐fold higher odds of ASCVD.
