Sanford Health awarded $1.8M to study rare kidney disease

Posted on

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $1.8 million grant to Kamesh Surendran, PhD, and the Surendran Lab at Sanford Research to study kidney genetics and disease.

Part of the lab’s primary focus is researching potential genetic and cellular causes of rare kidney diseases, including Alagille syndrome.

“For the past few years, we have been researching notch signaling in kidney cells and trying to understand the basic mechanisms as to what cellular defects may be causing this syndrome and why these individuals are susceptible to kidney diseases,” said Dr Surendran in a media release. “This grant helps us continue and broaden our research as we begin to find potential genetic and cellular causes of these kidney diseases.”
