Cirrhosis doesn’t cause higher risk of bleeding in pediatric liver transplant

Pediatric patients with cirrhosis had similar rates of bleeding with liver transplants to pediatric patients without cirrhosis, according to a poster presented at SPLIT 2021.

In this single-center retrospective study, data from pediatric patients with and without cirrhosis who underwent an isolated liver transplant, including blood loss during the procedure, were included.

Pediatric patients with cirrhosis had worse lab parameters than patients without cirrhosis, but their incidence of perioperative bleeding, thrombosis, and intra-operative blood product administration was not higher.

Pediatric patients with and without cirrhosis had similar time to start of clot formation, time to reach a fixed clot strength, and speed of fibrin accumulation.
