Prevalence of disease and procedure-associated damage in IgG4-RD highlighted at ACR Convergence 2024

Damage associated with both IgG4-related disease itself and the diagnostic or therapeutic procedures used to manage it is highly prevalent, affecting most patients, particularly in organs like the pancreas, kidneys, and salivary glands, according to a poster presented at the 2024 ACR Convergence.

Researchers analyzed data from 191 patients enrolled in a large IgG4-RD registry. The study found that 92% of patients experienced disease-related damage, with frequent involvement of internal organs such as the pancreas (86% of cases with pancreatic involvement) and kidneys (75% of renal cases). Damage was often asymptomatic during active disease.

The pancreas, salivary glands, kidneys, and orbits were the most commonly damaged organs, while invasive procedures also contributed significantly to morbidity. Salivary gland resections, lacrimal or orbital biopsies, and Whipple procedures were among the most frequent iatrogenic contributors to damage.
