Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome

Specialized dental care needed for children with genetic syndromes

Posted on

A recent study highlighted the unique dental challenges faced by children and adolescents with genetic syndromes, emphasizing the need for tailored preventive care and education. The research examined oral hygiene habits, dental care usage, and access to professional preventive treatments among Polish patients with conditions such as Prader-Willi, Down, Angelman, Silver-Russell, and Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndromes.

These patients were found to be at greater risk for plaque buildup, dental erosion, cavities, and gum disease. Despite their heightened vulnerability, the percentage of patients receiving professional dental care was significantly lower compared to a control group. Patients with silver-Russell syndrome demonstrated the highest frequency of oral hygiene practices, while those with Prader-Willi and Down syndromes showed less engagement in such measures. Over one-third of children with genetic syndromes who received dental care required treatment under general anesthesia.

The study underscores a concerning gap in this population’s access to adequate dental care and preventive treatments.
