Study reveals gaps in osteoporosis awareness among patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Although patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have similar levels of osteoporosis (OP) knowledge compared to healthy individuals, many are unaware of their increased risk of developing OP, highlighting the need for better education and targeted health strategies for this population, according to a study.
The study included 100 patients with RA and 50 healthy controls. Participants completed the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test and the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale.
There were no significant differences in OP knowledge between patients with RA and the control group. However, higher educational levels and longer RA disease duration were linked to better awareness of osteoporosis risks. Patients with RA with a family history of OP, those postmenopausal, and those on biological drugs perceived themselves as being at higher risk. Despite this, most RA patients were unaware of their increased risk for osteoporosis, underscoring the need for improved patient education and targeted health interventions.
