Venous thromboembolism is a frequent complication in adult with osteosarcoma

Adult patients with osteosarcoma (OS) are at a greater risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), according to a study, which found comparatively, patients with Ewing sarcoma (ES) had a lesser risk.

The rate of major bleeding was found to be similar in both patients with OS and ES.

In this retrospective chart review, 519 patients with OS and 165 patients with ES were followed from the time of their initial sarcoma diagnosis to VTE, MB, or death.

The 5-year cumulative incidences of VTE in OS and ES were 12% and 6.7%, respectively. VTE presentation related to catheter-related upper-extremity thrombosis was the most common. The 5-year cumulative incidences of major bleeding in OS and ES were 5.8% and 5.4%, respectively.

In patients with OS, VTE and major bleeding were associated with mortality, whereas in patients with ES, major bleeding was only associated with mortality.
