Flap reconstruction for foot and ankle STS essential for limb salvage

Posted on

Flap reconstruction following resection of a foot and ankle sarcoma is essential for limb salvage, according to a study.

This study included 44 patients with ankle or foot STS covered with a free (n = 21), pedicled (n = 13), or rotational perforator flap (n = 10).

There was a 10-year limb salvage rate of 84% and no amputations as a result of flap failure were needed.

In 43% of patients, complications occurred, with the most common being wound infections. No difference in complications rates occurred between patients undergoing the different flap types. There was no difference in the mean Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score between free flap and pedicled/perforator flap.
