Patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis may need closer monitoring for gout

Posted on

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis significantly increase the risk of hyperuricemia and gout, according to a study that emphasizes the need for clinicians to monitor and manage uric acid levels in these patients.

Researchers analyzed data from 8 studies to assess the bidirectional relationships among these conditions. Patients with psoriasis were found to have a 2.56-fold higher likelihood of developing hyperuricemia, while those with psoriatic arthritis faced a 3.56 times higher risk. Similarly, the risk of gout was nearly 5 times higher in psoriatic arthritis patients and almost twice as high in those with psoriasis.
